Game Developers Choice Award Nominations Revealed

The nominations for the Game Developers Choice Awards were released today, and it is an opportunity for developers to tell us which of 2016’s games they liked best. This year they have even added a Best VR/AR Game in recognition of this technology’s real move to becoming more mainstream.

Starting with the most nominations, Playdead’s Inside (review) has six nominations, including Best Audio, Best Design, and Game of the Year. It is not uncommon for smaller games to be nominated, but most of the winners have been AAA titles. The more recent exceptions are Journey winning in 2012 and Portal winning in 2007.

The popular multiplayer Overwatch (review) received five nominations including Best Technology, Best Visual Art, and Game of the Year. Firewatch  and Uncharted 4 (review) also received nominations for Game of the Year, Doom (review) received three nominations, and Dishonored 2 (review) received two nominations.

Let us know in the comments if award shows are a chance for an industry to honor and celebrate the best among them, or if is it only a chance for well-dressed people to get drunk for free. Can it not be both? You decide!

Jason became terminally addicted to videogames after receiving the NES at an early age. This addiction grew to include PC gaming and was cemented with the launch of the PS2. From then on, he was afflicted with epic RPGs, tense shooters, and deep strategy games, never becoming skillful, but never able to quit. He continues to play games (poorly) and share his passion for them to anyone willing to listen.
