Some of us have cowboys on the brain right now, but it’s a time for scary games too. With Halloween almost upon us, some studios are announcing scary games we can play around this time next year. Maid of Sker is a survival horror game inspired by a true story and Welsh folklore. Some of the underlying narrative ideas are from R.D. Blackmore’s Maid of Sker and the Welsh song “Y Ferch o’r Sger”, which only Hannah can pronounce correctly.
As Thomas Evans, you are going to Sker House (a real place) to save the woman you love, Elizabeth Williams (also real) in 1898 (likely a real year). Sker House is said to be very much haunted even today. The story focuses on their love, a disapproving family who seem more than happy to keep them apart with manacles, and all manner of spooky things.
The gameplay uses 3D sound. You can pick up items to use as traps, but everything makes noise. You can avoid the Quiet Men in the beginning. As you go farther into the game, you will have to time holding your breath until they are out of range. This isn’t a run-and-gun supernatural adventure. You will have to be crafty, and maybe a little lucky, to survive.
The game will be sinister, creepy, and lead to one of multiple endings, depending on your decisions. With almost a year to wait, check out the trailer, and be sure to add it your 2019 Halloween hopefuls list.
Press Release from Wales Interactive
Jason became terminally addicted to videogames after receiving the NES at an early age. This addiction grew to include PC gaming and was cemented with the launch of the PS2. From then on, he was afflicted with epic RPGs, tense shooters, and deep strategy games, never becoming skillful, but never able to quit. He continues to play games (poorly) and share his passion for them to anyone willing to listen.
