Shadow of the Colossus had one colossal of a soundtrack. It was so good it deserves a Twitter account of its own. But although that honour will have to be put on hold for another day, it is receiving a trophy of sorts. Taking the form of a vinyl record, the soundtrack to Shadow of the Colossus will be available to buy thanks to the efforts of iam8bit.
Graphics, storyline and unique content are all vital ingredients to a video game’s success. Or failure. But it is becoming ever more common for developers to invest a hefty sum into a release’s score, in an attempt to stir emotions and pump up the atmosphere.
There have been many soundtracks that even Mozart himself would be proud to associate himself with, but few have rivaled that of Shadow of the Colossus. So perhaps this release is not too surprising, though we are a little bummed that we can’t play it on our Walkmans…
The vinyl will be housed in a sleeve decorated with original artwork, whilst the music (all 35 tracks) will span 2 180-gram translucent coloured LPs. It is expected to ship sometime in Q2 of 2018, and is available to pre-order now at $40.
The news was published over on the official PlayStation Blog. And in addition to this melodic announcement, the site was also able to conduct an interview with the composer himself. Kow Otani can only be applauded for his masterpieces, with each remastered for the re-release.
“When it came time to update the music, while we were unable to redo every track, we wanted to add more depth to the opening and ending, so we increased the number of musicians and added more string instruments to the original recordings“, he said.
“The goal of this recording was less to change the track themselves and more to make the sense of scale even bigger.”
The remastered game of Shadow of the Colossus launches on February 7th. PSX 2017 gameplay footage can be found here.
