As we recently spoke about in our review, Shantae: Half-Genie Hero is as sweet as an ice cream sundae dipped in saccharine. That’s fine if you like that sort of thing but some of us need our games to beat us unmercifully. Sometimes we’ll even pay extra for them to insult us while they do it. WayForward have acknowledged this need and have announced that the platformer’s 1.01 update will add a Hard Core mode to the game’s main campaign, as well as fixing bugs and adding PlayStation TV support for cross play on Vita. Perfect.
Shantae’s update 1.01 arrives in North America on the 6th of March. Exact details of the bug fixes were not included with the announcement but we did get a nice list of what’s included in hardcore difficulty.
- Pain and suffering!
- Harder-hitting enemies!
- Faster enemy patterns!
- Faster scroll speeds!
- Remixed enemy locations, and more of ‘em!
- New boss patterns, attacks, and stats!
- Healing items capped at six!
- Re-balanced magic items!
- Poor Shantae!
Personally, we’re most excited for the pain and suffering. Further updates and larger DLC releases are planned down the line. Matt Bozon, Creative Director at WayForward, had this to say,
“We hope you’ll enjoy Hard Core Mode while you wait for the bigger DLC packs to arrive. Remember, no throwing controllers, and please keep your hair-whipping in the game where it belongs!”
Shantae: Half-Genie Hero from WayForward Technologies and XSEED Games is available now for PS4 and PS Vita as a digital download from the PlayStation Store. Let us know what you think of the game in the comments.
Dom is a gaming orphan; after his surrogate father SEGA was killed in the console wars, he was adopted by Sony and raised by various PlayStation consoles. He swears he’s not biased in any way though, so that’s good enough for us.
