Earlier today, we told you that Metal Gear Survive will require an internet connection and will contain microtransactions. Since it doesn’t release until the end of February, it’s hard to say whether that will be a world-ending problem or just another game in 2018. Thankfully, we have a beta starting on January 18th that should answer some of our big questions.
Running from January 18th – 22nd, teams of four will collect resources, plan and put up barriers, and work together to protect a Wormhole Digger from waves of enemies. The beta gameplay seems to be more RTS and tower defense than Metal Gear. Between waves, gather resources and explore the map for any loot. After setting up your barriers, you can poke the enemies with a stick and alternate yelling “Carl!” and “Rick!” like an episode of The Walking Dead.
For those of you Metal Gear purists on the fence, this beta may help you decide whether to pick up Metal Gear Survive when it hits North America on February 20th and the UK and Europe on February 22nd.
Jason became terminally addicted to videogames after receiving the NES at an early age. This addiction grew to include PC gaming and was cemented with the launch of the PS2. From then on, he was afflicted with epic RPGs, tense shooters, and deep strategy games, never becoming skillful, but never able to quit. He continues to play games (poorly) and share his passion for them to anyone willing to listen.
