You may call the author of this post old, uncool or lame, but his favorite activity within Sports Bar VR was the two chess tables near the skeeball machines and dartboards. It was a relatively simple affair where two people would sit on opposite sides and play the historic strategy game with PlayStation Move controllers. Still the feeling couldn’t be shaken that a dedicated chess game in virtual reality would definitely be interesting. Enter Ripstone Games and its creation, Chess Ultra.
The title is actually a sequel to 2012’s Pure Chess and will launch on PS4 and PSVR sometime in the Spring. It will have 4K visuals that bring single-player and online game modes to life. There may even be AI levels of difficulty that real grandmaster chess players have personally approved. So have fun with that. Alongside our robot overlords, Chess Ultra will feature online ranked, regular, Fischer and Marathon modes. Additionally, Twitch integration allows streamers to play with their viewers, who use the chat to move pieces.
We’ve been assured that more info will be revealed in the coming months, but for now we only have an announcement trailer which can be viewed above. Let us know how good of a chess player you are and if you think the coffee cups besides the game board means anything!
