13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim and The Challenges of Recording Voice Actors During a Pandemic; Game Releases September 22


Due to the health crisis, a lot of studios have had to face some big challenges. Delays are inevitable, but many developers are coming up with some creative solutions. During an interview appearing on the PlayStation Blog with Allie Doyon, the Lead Editor for the localization team for 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, we have the chance to pull back the curtain a bit to see some out of the box thinking.

Before the COVID decided to descend upon the world, the team was recording voice overs the old fashioned way – in a studio with the actor, director, and engineers. It was too risky later, because your actors need to have good lungs to do the job. Allie describes how the team got around the limitations to keep up the efforts. Many of the actors created a sound booth in their homes. To keep from having to forgo an English voice track, some shut themselves into a closet with a fancy microphone, and the audio was captured over a video conference call. It was even more complicated than your average audio recording, but everyone pitched in to overcome the technical and audio issues to deliver something great.

If you aren’t familiar with the next game from developer Vanillaware, it’s described as a sci-fi adventure with a narrative woven between thirteen different characters. Despite men in black and kaiju, there is a strong focus on the human element in the story. If you get lost on your journey, an Analysis mode will let you replay story parts and provide a glossary where you can review what you’ve collected so far.
