Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown is launching this Friday, but the game is going to bring a special treat for PSVR owners. It will ship with a special campaign just for PSVR that seeks to put you into the cockpit in a way that the normal game can’t hope to match. The story starts in 2014, and you pilot during the Erusea insurgency. The developer is keeping the story details a secret for now, but fans of Ace Combat 4 will pickup on some extra references.
As you fly around the not so friendly skies, you will experience everything as the pilot. You can move your head to check your position in 360 degrees of movement. The gauges will move realistically, and the pilot’s legs and arms (your virtual appendages) will move as you fly. You can also check your radar, ammo, damage level, and flares. It sounds as if the team is going for the most realistic flight simulator experience in VR that also doesn’t require you to enlist.
If you start to be a little dizzy, the PSVR mode will let you watch an airshow. Set on the deck of a carrier, Airshow Mode will let you watch jets fly overhead and control their tricks. Music from past Ace Combat games will play in the background, but I’m hoping the Top Gun soundtrack will be made available at some point.
Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown and it’s PSVR campaign will takeoff on January 18th.

Jason became terminally addicted to videogames after receiving the NES at an early age. This addiction grew to include PC gaming and was cemented with the launch of the PS2. From then on, he was afflicted with epic RPGs, tense shooters, and deep strategy games, never becoming skillful, but never able to quit. He continues to play games (poorly) and share his passion for them to anyone willing to listen.
