It’s been a very long time since anybody has uttered the words ‘Captain Tsubasa’. The last game in the bonkers football/anime mash-up released on the PS2, but Bandai Namco is bringing it back to PS4 later this year.
Bandai Namco announced today that Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions will be releasing on PS4 and other platforms later this year, though no exact date or release window has been mentioned at this time.
What we do have is a short teaser trailer that is about as mental as you’d expect from a football game that’s being matched with anime. Expect lots of dramatic kicks, overly dramatic sliding tackles, and tears whenever something ever so slightly emotional happens. I wouldn’t rule out a Pokemon turning up at some point either.
When Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions does eventually release on PS4, you can expect Story Modes, Versus Mode, and Online Versus Mode. Fingers crossed Bandai Namco hasn’t looked at FIFA’s Ultimate Team model to make a few extra pennies…
“We’re excited to take to the pitch and bring Captain Tsubasa back to western console and PC gaming audiences with Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions.” said Dennis Lee, Director of Brand Marketing at BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment America Inc. “With Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions we’re combining the global excitement surrounding the sport of soccer with the nostalgic appeal of the classic Captain Tsubasa franchise; all presented with anime style and flair. Soccer and anime fans are in for a truly unique and unforgettable experience!”
