The Atelier series must be doing something right, because Koei Tecmo announced the release of the 18th game in the series today. We are not saying it is a competition, but take that, Square Enix!
Atelier Firis: The Alchemist and The Mysterious Journey will pick up after the events of Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book, but it seems to be a stand alone story that you can enjoy without experiencing the first entry in the “Mysterious” saga. You play as Firis Mistlud, and she has been hanging out in the same secluded town for all her 15 years of life, using a magical ability to find buried crystal materials.
After learning about an Alchemy Exam, she sets off with her older sister, Liane, on a grand adventure to be a certified alchemist. We are sure she will learn a lot about herself in the process and even grow up a little along the way, but passing the exam is not the end. There will be three paths you can choose, and you will be able to jump between them at any point in the game. The three paths will be Alchemy, Combat, and Character relationships.
We are looking forward to being able to choose our own path when the game is released in Spring 2017 on the PS4 and digitally only on the PS Vita. Check out the trailer, and let us know in the comments which Atelier game is the best in the series.

Jason became terminally addicted to videogames after receiving the NES at an early age. This addiction grew to include PC gaming and was cemented with the launch of the PS2. From then on, he was afflicted with epic RPGs, tense shooters, and deep strategy games, never becoming skillful, but never able to quit. He continues to play games (poorly) and share his passion for them to anyone willing to listen.
