Gearbox held its PAX Online panel to coincide with the one-year anniversary of Borderlands 3’s release on PS4, Xbox One, and PC, and the anniversary special brought about some good news for next-gen players.
Gearbox announced that Borderlands 3 will be releasing on PS5 and Xbox Series X and, as it should be, it’ll be a free upgrade for current-gen players going into the next-gen machines. That means if you’ve got Borderlands 3 on your PS4, you’ll get the PS5 version at no extra cost, even though it’s going to have some massive improvements. Your DLC and any other bits and bobs that you’ve bought will carry over to the next-gen machines, too.
Borderlands 3 will run at 60fps on PS5 and Xbox Series X, and at 4K, though only in single-player. Still, that’s impressive enough and a massive improvement over what we have now on PS4 and Xbox One. Plus, having 60fps/4K only in single-player means there’s room for… four-player split-screen co-op. How awesome is that?
What’s more, and also relevant to the current-gen versions of Borderlands 3, is that Gearbox is going to release a free update to include vertical split-screen to PS4 and Xbox One. Currently, Borderlands 3 uses the much-maligned horizontal split-screen (c’mon, we all know vertical is the way to go) for its couch co-op multiplayer.
