Control Will Be Backwards Compatible on the PS5 But Won’t Take Advantage of Hardware Upgrades

If you were upset to learn that the Control Ultimate Edition was necessary to play on the PS5, 505 Games has decided to address the issue. In a post on the game’s official site, they reveal that you will be able to play the PS4 version of Control and its DLC on the PS5 through backward compatibility.

The difference is that only Control Ultimate Edition will benefit from the PS5’s hardware improvements. The decision was explained as follows:

“The objective of Control Ultimate Edition was not to release new exclusive content on the next gen platforms, but to offer the full Control gameplay experience to new Control players in a single, easy-to-find product. The PlayStation 5/Xbox Series X versions of Control contain the same content as the current gen game, though they do take full advantage of the power and features provided by these new consoles.

The upgrade path that we are offering is only possible when upgrading from the same version of the game. As we are only doing additional development on Control Ultimate Edition on the next gen platforms, we are unfortunately unable to offer an upgrade path to all existing Control players. We understand how this might upset a number of players but you will still be able to play the 2019 edition of Control and each Expansion on the new platforms.”

The Control Ultimate Edition is the only version of the game you’ll be able to purchase on the PS5, and it will include all the content from the base game and DLC. This probably means browsing the store on a PS4 and PS5 will look different for certain content, and that gives me several questions unrelated to Control.

They know that this isn’t what their fans wanted to hear, but the team had to make some tough choices. Is this a big deal for you, or are you happy to be able to play through backward compatibility?
