EA Sports Announces a New Golf Game to Putt 2K Sports in its Place

PGA Tour

EA Sports has announced it is planning on developing a new golf game – right at the time when 2K Sports’ offering is doing very well, culminating in a deal with Tiger Woods himself. But has it missed the tee off time, or could it still score an ace before this round is out? Going on its pedigree, I certainly wouldn’t rule EA Sports out.

EA Sports PGA Tour could be seen as a knee-jerk response against PGA Tour 2K21. But the game – expected to have a launch date announced officially in the coming months – could be just what fans of the sport need. That’s because multiple development companies working on the same genre guarantees a certain standard is maintained – and 2K Sports has already set the bar high. But I guess there are always exceptions to the rule.

PGA Tour 2K21 could be called the unexpected hit of 2020, as fans complemented it on its realism and generosity in selection. But it is far from perfect, leaving room for an opponent to grab their own bag and hit the green. And there’s no bigger competitor than EA Sports.

In a deal with the actual PGA Tour, which is rumoured to span multiple years, the game promises that “golf fans will be able to build their virtual career and experience the sights, sounds, and thrills of the PGA Tour including The Players Championship, FedExCup Playoffs, and more unforgettable events”. Granted, all of which sounds very similar to what’s out there now. The difference will probably come in its finish, however, with the potential for a more customisable career mode being a high possibility.

It’s the backbone of the game that may have the most potential, though.

Via the frostbite engine, EA Sports is hoping to deliver an immersive and dynamic environment that mirrors the real world accordingly. Whether that is an accurate description of the end result is yet to be seen, but the PlayStation 5 certainly offers a lot of potential where sports games are concerned. And if they’re only focussing on the newer console, all the better.

All I ask for is a career mode that isn’t locked behind a server activation, a la PGA Tour 2K21…
