Ubisoft subtly teased third-person gameplay in the original Far Cry 6 reveal, but now we have confirmation that the game will feature some third-person gameplay. But not the entire game. That would be silly.
Remember during the reveal for Far Cry 6 when the trailer showed us the game’s hero, Dani, and it was more than her arms holding a gun? We got to actually see the character during cutscenes, which isn’t something the Far Cry series is known for. Look at Far Cry 5 – we neither saw nor heard the playable character during their time in Hope County. Things will be different in Far Cry 6. Very, very different.
Speaking to Gamespot, Far Cry 6’s narrative director Navid Khavari explained that there will be some instances where players can play the game in third-person, as well as during cinematics. The reason for the shift in perspective, according to Khavari, is that it is easier for players to connect with the character Dani. That makes sense, for sure, and I can definitely see myself enjoying the story more with some proper cinematics rather than watching my character’s hand flop around while other people do all the talking.
But what about during gameplay? You won’t be able to play the entire game in third-person – it’s still a first-person shooter – but you will be able to shift the view during some sections of the game.
“Players will also be able to see their character customizations in these highly-realized story beats. In Guerrilla Camps, this is also an opportunity for players to be able to see their fully customized character, everything from their backpack to their clothes,” Khavari told Gamespot.
Khavari also revealed that when players are using the Supremo backpacks, the game will transition to third-person so that players can “see all of the backpack’s effects, and better feel its impact in action.”
This is a big change for the Far Cry series which, up until Far Cry 6, has been completely first-person. It’s still a first-person shooter but it will be nice to see the main character at times, even if it’s only to see how ridiculous one can make her look with some outlandish outfits.
