Full motion video games in the past have been an underrated genre. If executed wrongly, they can lead to corny moments and bad experiences overall. But, in recent years this narrative way of storytelling has really excelled. Wales Interactive’s new title appears to be a promising edition. From the makers of The Bunker and Late Shift comes the interactive movie sci-fi thriller The Complex.
The story has been written by Lynn Renee Maxcy (The Handmaid’s Tale TV Series) and directed by Paul Raschid. If that hasn’t intrigued curiosity within itself, it will feature actors such as Michelle Mylett (Letterkenny), Ali Weaver (Grantchester) and Kate Dickie (Game of Thrones). Hopefully, the acting is in safe hands and we’re in store for a truly satisfying cinematic experience, with maybe a few good placed jump scares!
The premise follows Dr Amy Tenant after a bio attack has hit London. She and her friend find themselves locked in an HQ laboratory. The complex will leave players with numerous moral dilemmas including who will live and who will die. One dilemma we witness in the trailer includes: there is only one viral left, which civilian will you give the vaccine too?
The game will track Amy’s personality by the decisions you make into five categories, openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism. Along with this, your relationships with a variety of characters you interact with will be dependent on these decisions, leading to overall strong or weak connections that will impact the game. With eight potential endings, it appears that your choices will carry significant weight.
What decisions will you pick? The game is set for release on March 31st 2020.
