A while back you might recall that the PlayStation store listed the upcoming God of War release date as March 22, 2018. It was promptly removed but not before causing a bit of frenzy and hope for God of War fans like many of us at Pure PlayStation. While there’s still no official word from Sony or Santa Monica Studios the March 22 release has once again gained some momentum due to a recent listing at a Portuguese retailer. We know what you are thinking, March 22, 2018 falls on a Thursday and video game releases are for Tuesdays or Fridays. That’s true, but March and God of War have had a great relationship and just maybe there’s something else at play behind the March 22nd date.
In the history of God of War, five out of the six games have released in March with the exception of God of War: Ghost of Sparta for the PSP which came out November 2, 2010. Our guess is that would have also released in March had it not come out the same year God of War III did. We’ve excluded both God of War Collections remastered for PS3 of older and handheld games as well as the mobile game God of War: Betrayal but if you are keeping track, they too betray our God of War March madness theory.
A chronological God of War release date history:
God of War (PS2) March 22, 2005
God of War II (PS2) March 13, 2007
God of War: Chains of Olympus (PSP) March 4, 2008
God of War III (PS3) March 16, 2010
God of War: Ghost of Sparta (PSP) November 2, 2010
God of War: Ascension (PS3) March 12, 2013
It is very interesting that the first God of War released on March 22, 2005. Could it be that Sony and Santa Monica Studios chose this date to reboot God of War in homage to the game that started it all thirteen years earlier on the PlayStation 2? We’re probably reading way too much into that, but it should also be noted that Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan and Asia Localization Producer Chris Ashimine told Japanese Magazine Weekly Famitsu that an official announcement of the game’s release date would be announced soon. We reckon that any day now we will hear the exact release date for God of War 2018 and while it may not be the 22nd, there’s a fairly good chance it’ll release in March. Or at least we hope so…
