Hitman developer IO Interactive has dropped a bombshell today with the news that it will be developing and publishing a brand new 007 James Bond game, though details are very thin on the ground right now.

The announcement comes with a teaser trailer and a new website for “Project 007” – the working title for the game. What we do know is that the game will be an origin story for James Bond, and it’ll be the first such origin story for the beloved super spy.

The official website gives a brief summary, as well as some clues as to how long it will be until we’re playing Project 007. The answer? A long time, most likely. The official website mentions that IO Interactive is recruiting staff to work on the game, which suggests it has not yet entered full production. Given how long great games take to make, it could be a good year or two until we actually get to play as James Bond. Between now and then, expect screenshots and trailers to fuel the hype train.

From IO Interactive:

It’s Bond. James Bond.

Project 007 (working title) is a brand new James Bond video game to be developed and published by IO Interactive.

Featuring a wholly original Bond story, players will step into the shoes of the world’s favourite Secret Agent to earn their 00 status in the very first James Bond origin story.

IO Interactive is currently recruiting elite talent from around the world to join the team that will build out this exciting and unique gaming title.
