After its announcement, Just Cause 4 was a little shy on the details. E3 saw a plethora of Hollywood trailers but Rico Rodriguez must have missed the clapper board. However, Avalanche Studios is now ready to talk.
In an interview with Game Reactor, the game’s director Francesco Antolini had the following to say and promises to make:
“We want to make the best open world sandbox ever. We want to be the sandbox that gives the biggest possibility for expression in an open world. We wanted to push our physics to the boundary, and we wanted to get back to a feeling of variety and discovery that I feel we lost a little bit with Just Cause 3.”
They are big claims considering the technical difficulties faced by the third installment; its pogo-ing framerates were a definite distraction from the fantastic physics engine underpinning all that was possible. But the consensus seems to be if that can be remedied then the fourth will be one heck of a game before any additions that are possible four years down the line are made.
Its sandbox nature is a major selling point as it allows gamers to manipulate the world around them and shape the way they want to play. But Antolini added that, despite the fluidity of the physics, that isn’t the only way to play.
“We know very well that not all gamers want to fiddle with the sandbox just for the sake of it, and so the truth is if you want to you can completely disregard this aspect of the game.”
It sounds as though there’s a lot going on in the sequel. But then again this is Just Cause; when isn’t there a lot going on. Let’s just hope this one doesn’t end up being a lost cause.
