New frontiers in a galaxy far, far away.
A new update has been announced for No Man’s Sky in a rather sweet and poignant video celebrating the game’s fifth anniversary.
At this point, it’s well known that No Man’s Sky did not get off to the best start after releasing in 2016. There was a lot of over-promising and under-delivering coupled with the immense expectations from fans and the pressure Hello Games was under during the time of development with an average team of 6 and 15 at launch.
In 2021 No Man’s Sky is a very different beast from the base game that launched in 2016 and can be considered to be one of the best comeback stories in gaming history. Since its launch, Hello Games has released a total of 16 updates each one slowly but surely improving the game, with the No Man’s Sky: Next update being something of a soft relaunch adding multiplayer, and bringing in a vast number of new players.
The story of No Man’s Sky is set to continue with the Frontiers update with the briefest of teasers being attached to the celebration video. There is no set release date but the new update will be “coming soon” to PS4, PS5, PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and VR platforms. Most importantly, the new update will be entirely free to all existing players.
Speaking to PlayStation Blog, Hello Games founder Sean offered some insight as to what the new update will contain: “our next update Frontiers is something I’m very excited about. In some ways, it is just another update, but in other ways, it’s a missing piece of the sci-fi fantasy that we’ve always wanted to add, and very fitting for our fifth anniversary.”
Murray also said: “there is still a lot we want to try, so much we are still excited for. The next step on that journey is not far off. We’ll have more to share on Frontiers with travellers very soon.”
