We’ve detailed how a holiday update was coming to Overwatch for a few weeks now but Blizzard finally took to their blog to detail it. The event will be called Winter Wonderland and features things we expected and some not so much. To start the game’s Loot Boxes will once again be filled seasonal goodies and introduce one hundred new cosmetic items. These include unlocks for profile icons, sprays, victory poses, emotes, highlight intros, and skins. These Winter Loot Boxes will only be around from today until January 2nd so get to unlocking them (or buying them if that’s your style).
There will also be a brand new game mode called Mei’s Snowball Offensive. It’s a 6v6, single elimination match where Mei’s weapon fires a super-powered snowball. Taking out an opponent will only take one hit but if you miss you’ll have to scurry on over to a snow pile so you can reload. Your ice walls and cryo-freeze ability will still be functional as to provide much need assistance. Then when the battles start to heat up, you can activate her ultimate which allows multiple snowballs to be fired in a semi-automatic fashion.
Last but not least, maps Hanamura and King’s Row have received a snowy overhaul. This variation will appear in all game modes and you can get a glimpse of them in the trailer above. Winter Wonderland is live right now on the PlayStation 4 so get to it. Just don’t get mad at us when we peg you in the face with a snowball.
