Despite friendship being a central theme in the story, you’ll still have plenty of opportunities to give anything within the reach of your sword a good beat down in SWORD ART ONLINE: Alicization Lycoris. In a new trailer today, we are shown that combat is more than just a beat ’em up (not that there’s anything wrong with that).
Combat is a combination of well-timed blocks and relying on the strength of your team. Using a group of four players or four AI-controlled characters, the trailer shows you encountering creatures out in the wild. Your brave team will attack individually, but you can also use a full team attack for extra impact. When whatever you just hit decides to hit you back, it’s time to guard. The trailer shows a giant crab being stunned after you time it successfully.
The “deep combat system” expands with Sacred Arts, different weapons and items, and, of course, sword skills. Sacred Arts are shown in a radial menu. They go by too quickly to see much, but a single character has multiple on display. The biggest surprise was the size of the skill tree. It was also quick, but it looks like there are a lot of ways to customize your character with skill points spent over combat skills, passive skills, EX skills, and sword skills.
The intense battles will seek to emulate the feel from the source material. Along with the general skills being demonstrated, there is a massive attack that takes over the entire screen around 36 seconds into the trailer. If this sounds like your jam (and you know who you are), give the entire thing a watch. It’s the closest you’ll come to SWORD ART ONLINE: Alicization Lycoris until its July 10th release.

Jason became terminally addicted to videogames after receiving the NES at an early age. This addiction grew to include PC gaming and was cemented with the launch of the PS2. From then on, he was afflicted with epic RPGs, tense shooters, and deep strategy games, never becoming skillful, but never able to quit. He continues to play games (poorly) and share his passion for them to anyone willing to listen.
