Everyone has high expectations for Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, and a new extended gameplay demo from Gamescom shows those expectations are warranted. The game looks amazing from the colors to the clarity. This may be the must-buy launch game. Even the mundane act of breaking crates looks great.
With my enthusiasm back in check, the approximately seven minutes of gameplay is early in the game. Ratchet and his robotic pal, Clank, are facing off against the evil Dr. Nefarious. A mishap with the Dimensionator device causes rifts in the fabric of space-time to appear. This is also where we see how the PS5’s fancy new harddrive chews through loading times like a fat boy through cake when jumping through these rifts.
We also see the weird and wonderful new weapons, one of which freezes enemies by turning them into topiaries. Weapons level up to do more damage, and the world generally feels alive with people moving to avoid the damage and plenty of movement in the backgrounds. This is a busy world.
We only have a PS5 launch window release date, and it’s most likely because Sony has not given a release date for the PS5. Once that dam breaks, we’ll know when we can go on another exciting adventure in Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart.
We sometimes link to online retail stores. If you buy something from our links, we may make a small commission which goes towards keeping the lights on and coffee in the pot.
Jason became terminally addicted to videogames after receiving the NES at an early age. This addiction grew to include PC gaming and was cemented with the launch of the PS2. From then on, he was afflicted with epic RPGs, tense shooters, and deep strategy games, never becoming skillful, but never able to quit. He continues to play games (poorly) and share his passion for them to anyone willing to listen.
