Respawn’s Apex Legends Out Now on PS4

As expected, EA and Respawn Entertainment have announced and released Apex Legends as a free-to-play game on PS4 today.

Apex Legends is a free-to-play battle royale shooter set within the Titanfall universe. It’s a squad-based affair with players being able to choose from one of eight Legends to take into battle. Rather than it being a free-for-all, Apex Legends is a team-based game and the last team alive is crowned the winner.

Teamwork is the order of the day in Apex Legends as each Legend comes with unique abilities, such a the character Lifeline, a medic who can be used to shield allies from enemies and even bring them back from the brink of death. According to EA and Respawn, a balanced team is essential, so it might be worth having a chat with your mates before you all go using the same Legend.

“Our goal in every game you play is that you come in with a plan but you leave with a story,” said Drew McCoy, Lead Producer for Apex Legends. “We’re building a game that is not only going to deliver a fun and memorable experience at launch, but something we can keep growing for a long time to come.”

Apex Legends also looks to set itself apart from the crowd of battle royale shooters by employing a few different “innovations”, as EA calls them. For instance, before a match begins you’ll be able to choose exactly where you’ll be dropped on the map. Then there’s the Respawn Beacons which are one-time use locations where dead allies can be revived. There’s also the Ping communication system that lets you call out enemies, weapons, and locations with the push of a button. Or you could, you know, use your bloody microphone… Though I guess that would actually be really handy if you were playing with randoms who don’t speak a common language.

Apex Legends will follow a season model with themed seasons. Each season will bring new content like weapons, Legends, skins, and more. The first season will start in March and you’ll be able to buy a Battle Pass that’ll give you exclusive access to cosmetic items that are earned through playing the game.

Apex Legends is available to download for free on the PlayStation Store right now. We’ll obviously be giving it a go once it’s downloaded, so be sure to check in with Pure PlayStation to see what we make of it in our upcoming review.
