There are plenty of heroes in games and film today, but one rises above them all. Shaq. After surviving a less than stellar game in the early 90s, he has had to apply icy-hot to those deep wounds for years. Very soon, he will have the chance to right that wrong by giving us a new game, and it will receive a physical release with “Bonus FU” DLC.
It’s nice, but why go with a physical release? We keep hearing everything is going digital. Leo Zullo, Managing Director of Wired Productions answered that question by saying the response to Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn has been “better than we could have ever imagined, and certainly settles the score of ’94 and puts right the legacy of Shaq Fu. So much so, that we wanted to make the physical retail edition something truly memorable for gamers who prefer something more tangible and collectable. When they open up their box copies we’re genuinely intrigued and excited to gauge players’ reactions to the additional DLC content”.
For now, the “Bonus FU” DLC is a mystery. We know it will include more levels and a “famous main character”. Honestly, our expectations are pretty high. The developer has Shaq voicing the character, and they had the will to resurrect the Shaq Fu franchise. These people are probably capable of anything. Is it another major athlete, such as Bo Jackson? He could say things like, “Bo knows roundhouse kicks” when he connects with an enemy. Maybe, they managed to pull Michael Jordan into the game for a cameo. (Yes, please!)
If you are not familiar with Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn, it is a sequel to the 1994 game, Shaq Fu. It wasn’t good, and the developers actually used that in their marketing for this game. At least, they have a sense of humor.
The new game is a beat em up with combos, boss fights, and Shaq’s different alter egos. It sounds fine, but it’s the story that really elevates this one for me. There are demonic celebrities that are sent from hell to take over the world by brainwashing people. (Is Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn satire?) Check out the trailer here to see why this game is not taking itself too seriously. (Check out the screenshot at the bottom of this article for more proof. The guy can laugh at himself.)
We look forward to learning who the new main character is and how the “Bonus FU” DLC makes a crazy game even crazier when Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn hits the streets on June 5th.
