Shin Megamin Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster Coming Spring 2021

Along with the long-awaited Shin Megami Tensei V (only coming to Switch), Atlus fans will be getting a remake of an Atlus gem next year. The Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne HD Remaster will take you from the happy, friendship-filled battles of the modern Persona universe to the darker world of a post-destruction Tokyo in a fight for your life.

The main character is a high school student who is transformed into a demi-fiend. As a half-man and half-demon, you will explore Tokyo battling the demons and recruiting some of them to fight with you. It takes the familiar turn-based combat system from Persona that uses a monster’s weaknesses against them in battle for extra damage and adds in some other changes. It’s been a while since I played it, but it’s a big variation on the theme.

Originally released in 2003 in Japan, Nocturne was the first game in the Shin Megami Tensei series to come to the West. It was remarkable for it’s interesting art style and setting that combined the modern world with creatures from multiple religions and myths. I also remember a very high encounter rate that allowed me to sometimes take two or three steps between fights.

Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remake will be heading to the PS4 in the spring of 2021, and I look forward to diving back into its world and characters. (I was actually thinking about replaying this game not too long ago, since I have a PS2 copy.) Does this mean a Digital Devil Saga HD remake is on the way? I can only hope.
