Some Q&A with Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot

At E3, Ubisoft CEO, Yves Guillemot, sat down to answer a few questions. It wasn’t with us, but we can dream. The video was posted to YouTube today, and it is almost eight minutes of answers to some pretty big questions from the mind heading one of the biggest publishers. (If you want an idea of what some of us think about Ubisoft’s direction over the past few years, check out Chris’ opinion article from a couple of months ago.)

I won’t spoil the video completely, but I was most interested in the future of Ubisoft. Guillemot believes the next generation of consoles is the last. Although we have been hearing that for a while, it might be right this time. Ubisoft is looking into ways to stream its games to all kinds of devices, and this will replace the dedicated hardware of a console. I would think you would still need some device to receive the game stream, but that tech should become easier and cheaper over time.

The other big item that Guillemot repeated was listening to player feedback and giving tools to players to create content. Ubisoft’s future direction is to incorporate more of that feedback into game design, while building worlds that players can manipulate for themselves. They have demonstrated some of that in Far Cry 5’s Arcade Mode.

The final thing I pulled from the interview is that Ubisoft is working on a new Splinter Cell. It may not be soon, but it’s going to happen.

Check out the entire video to see what Yves Guillemot thinks about the future of gaming, Ubisoft’s thoughts on the Chinese gaming market, and other insights into the direction of Ubisoft.
