Game install sizes never used to be that much of an issue or were even totally non-existent in the early days of PlayStation gaming. It’s not so anymore. Game install sizes on PS4 have become more bloated as the generation has progressed, and it’s not going to slow down with PS5.
Over on the PlayStation retail website, several games have had their hard drive requirements detailed in product listings. This has revealed that Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales will take up 50GB, while the Ultimate Edition – which includes a remaster of Marvel’s Spider-Man – will take up 105GB. The upcoming Demons Souls Remake will take up a further 66GB, meaning if you had those two games installed on launch day, you’d be well on your to having used a quarter of the available hard drive space.
This is likely to get worse before it gets better. Games sizes will balloon before developers can optimise their loads for the machines. Microsoft is attempting to remedy this somewhat with its Smart Delivery system, but it’s going to take a little more to give players peace of mind before buying more than a few games at a time.
Thankfully, there is the option for expandable storage, but that is another cost on top of the initial console purchase and any games you’ve splashed out on. Even the cheapest bundle suddenly becomes expensive if expandable storage is expected.
Sony recently announced the release dates and prices for the two PS5 models, and we also got our first tease for God of War: Ragnarok. We also had our first look at the long-rumoured Harry Potter RPG, Hogwarts Legacy. Sony also announced that Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales would be available on PS4 as well as PS5, a sharp turnaround from the previously held line of “next-gen only.” Not only that, but Horizon Forbidden West will also be losing its PS5 exclusivity.
Of course, we also got the good news that PS5 players who have an active PS Plus subscription would be treated to some free games available on day one. This has been dubbed The PS Plus Collection, and it carries with it a selection of the best PS4 games, including The Last of Us Remastered, God of War, and Battlefield 1. We also got a new Resident Evil Village (Resident Evil 8) trailer that’ll scare your socks off and confirmation that Fortnite will be a launch game on PS5.
We sometimes link to online retail stores. If you buy something from our links, we may make a small commission which goes towards keeping the lights on and coffee in the pot.
Chris has been writing about gaming news for far too long, and now he’s doing it even more. A true PlayStation know-it-all, Chris has owned just about every Sony console that ever existed. Trophies are like crack to this fella. (Bronze trophies, that is – he only has one Platinum.)
