The re-remake of the original Star Ocean game is available for you to purchase today. After being released on the Super Famicom in 1996 and remade for the PSP in 2007 as Star Ocean: First Departure, it’s been updated with fancy HD visuals and new features for our modern PS4. Those HD visuals are probably the most noticeable difference, but it’s not just a facelift. There are new illustrations from Katsumi Enami who worked on Star Ocean: The Last Hope. You can switch between the old and new, so it’s icing on the cake. (The PlayStation Blog interviewed Katsumi Enami about this process, so you can go here for more details.)
The other big change is the voice over. You can stick with the PSP full voice-over in Japanese or English, or you can go with the new version. The new version is only in Japanese, but it’s from the original cast of the Super Famicom version of the game. That version was only previously released in Japan.
For those of us who are short on time or want more difficulty options, there are some other new features. There is the Adjusted Game Balance that “enables players to experience more challenges in combat”. There is also a new Speed Mode that lets you move across the world faster.
If you always wanted to give the Star Ocean series a go, the first title just became a lot more accessible. Check out the trailer for a look at the gameplay, and you can buy it now.
