TGS 2020: Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- The Prophecy of the Throne Trailer Reveals New Characters; Releasing January 29, 2021

Since my headline is longer than a child’s wait for Christmas morning, let’s hit the big news first: the new Re:ZERO game is releasing on January 29th, 2021. This announcement was made during a character reveal trailer from Tokyo Game Show. The new characters surround the mysterious sixth royal candidate named Melty Pristis. The press release describes her as the following:

“A nun of the Transcendent Dragon Church, which worships the Holy Dragon, and the sixth royal candidate of the Kingdom of Lugunica.
Polite, respectful, and humble, those who encounter her tend to be stricken with a desire to protect her.

She takes on any challenge with her utmost effort, but she can be a bit of an airhead and often makes careless blunders.”

She doesn’t seem like a bad person, and neither does any of the rest of her entourage, even though we dont’ have much info on them. Her knight’s name is Tiga Rauleon, the civil official sent by the church is Sakura Element, and her “reticent bodyguard” is named Salum. Fans of cute things will be happy to see the squirrel looking creature, likely spirit, and “Puck’s admirer” (aren’t we all?) named Pooka. We are also introduced to the new baddie named Wolf, an assassin trying to kill the royal candidates.

The game has a new story about a sixth candidate showing up after Subura has been in Lugunica for a month. After hearing the selection has been delayed, he and Emilia rush to the capital, and Emilia is automatically assumed to be the imposter. Subaru will need to gather intel to prove her innocence by investigating locations and speaking to other characters. Once armed with these facts, you’ll have to make decisions on how to proceed. Subaru will make use of his “Return by Death” ability, so we can assume not all the decisions are correct.

The story and characters are being supervised by the original author, Tappei Nagatsuki, and the original character designer, Shinichirou Otsuka. If you’re not watching the anime, you absolutely should. Since it’s not listed on Crunchyroll’s continuing simulcast list for fall anime, this game may be your only chance to have new content in this interesting universe for a while.

You can pre-order and receive goodies in the Day One Edition and the much bigger Collector’s Edition of the game. No matter which you choose, Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- The Prophecy of the Throne will release on January 29th, 2021.
