The Academy: The First Riddle was announced today, and it’s inspiration comes from the worlds of Harry Potter and Professor Layton. The team at Pine Studio, the developers of Faraway, loved both of the properties and wanted to combine them. Boris Barbir, Pine Studio’s Co-owner and Product Manager, explained what they were really trying to accomplish as follows:
“We’re huge fans of the Professor Layton series and its colorful puzzles. We wanted to make a game that would allow players on all platforms to experience that thrill of getting a puzzle just right. We are big fans of Harry Potter, so the school is greatly inspired by Hogwarts, but it’s also inspired by the architecture of our city, Zagreb. Early on in development, it became clear that what we actually set off to achieve was to capture the essence of being a kid – the feeling that adventure lies around every corner.”
The story follows Sam, a freshman at the Academy. He’ll have to uncover and solve around 200 different puzzles over the roughly 20 hours of gameplay. Each puzzle will bring him closer to the truth of this mysterious place. It’s a school, so he’ll meet many different characters as well. We can only hope there is a haunted bathroom or two.
The Academy: The First Riddle is coming to lesser platforms first (does anyone care about console/platform wars anymore?), but it will come to consoles later this summer. Check out the trailer for a look at the puzzles, characters, and supernatural happenings you’ll encounter.
