Developers have been looking to make their games more cinematic for years, but the transition from console to the silver screen frequently winds up disappointing fans. While we wait for the Uncharted film, Ubisoft has announced they will be making a movie out of The Division. After Assassin’s Creed this year, why not?
While details are sparse, Ubisoft will be tapping Stephen Gaghan to write the story. His previous credits include Traffic, Syriana, Havoc, The Alamo, and Call of Duty: Ghosts. He seems to have his war writing resume up to date.
There will also be some top Hollywood talent joining the project. The film will star Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain. This will not be the first time Jake has been in a videogame property. He previously demonstrated his acting chops in another Ubisoft property – Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Let us hope he can bring that depth of emotion to the new project. Jessica Chastain previously starred in The Martian, Interstellar, and Zero Dark Thirty, and we did not see any videogame movies after quickly scanning through her career.
We always hope the next movie will be amazing, but with terrible examples, such as Doom and Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (the first one was OK), we remain skeptical.

Jason became terminally addicted to videogames after receiving the NES at an early age. This addiction grew to include PC gaming and was cemented with the launch of the PS2. From then on, he was afflicted with epic RPGs, tense shooters, and deep strategy games, never becoming skillful, but never able to quit. He continues to play games (poorly) and share his passion for them to anyone willing to listen.
