A con job Han Solo would be proud of
A video has appeared online that seems to show an unannounced video game based on the Star Wars series The Mandalorian. Or does it?
No. It’s impressive, but it’s almost certainly a fake, though it does look quite good and it could easily fool those not in the know, especially with the little convincer at the end. At the very end of the video, the game is paused and the Stadia menu pops out from the right-hand side showing the player’s username (illegible) and ‘Star Wars The Mandalorian.
I’m not buying it.
The channel that this video has been posted is run by a chap called Christopher Turner who is… a video game industry veteran. According to his Patreon page, he’s a “Senior Character Artist as well as a Senior Tech Artist at a local studio.”
In other words, he has the skills required to put together a basic but convincing fake. If you go through his channel, which I have, you can find he has many videos showing how to rig character animations and put together detailed environments.
There’s also the omission of the trademark information. Here’s the menu for Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order:
Notice the copyright and trademark notes at the bottom left of the screen? Here’s the main menu for the “leaked” Mandalorian game:
Nothing. In fact, the menu seems to be in a letterbox aspect ratio – unusual for games. There’s also the fact that there’s no ‘TM’ on either property name. No matter where you see the words ‘Star Wars’ in a video game, there’s always the little TM mark on the end.
It’s a well-done fake by all accounts and it was a good touch to get the kids to sit with their heads poking up in front of the camera, making it seem like it was some kind of industry event. But these are still Rona times and we media people aren’t sitting around in darkened rooms together just yet.
So yeah, debunked. Sorry to spoil the fun. You can go back to doom scrolling now.
