Torment: Tides of Numenera is the upcoming choice-driven RPG from publisher Techland Entertainment, in case you hadn’t heard. In the style of classic CRPGs like Baldur’s Gate and Planescape: Torment, developer inXile Entertainment aims to bring us a deep, player driven story while bringing the ‘top-down RPG’ into the modern age. Today, we’re treated to a new story trailer explaining just who your character is and the peril they will face. You can check the trailer out above in breathless anticipation of the game’s February 28th release date.
Developer inXile have already shown off their multiple-path questing system, giving us a taste of how we the player can shape our own path in Torment: Tides of Numenera. Now, they’ve revealed just who your character will be and what’s driving them. Turns out you’re the last body to be cast off by a delightful fella known as the ‘changing god,’ an immortal with the handy ability to shift his consciousness into a new body at will, thus cheating death. Thing is, once he’s vacated a body it’s reborn with a new consciousness and that’s where you come in. That’s not all either. It turns out that death itself is none too happy that there’s someone out there who keeps ducking the scythe and he’s sent an envoy of balance ‘The Sorrow’ to eradicate the changing god and all his ‘children’ – that means you.
This all means that the player character will start as something of a blank slate, the perfect setup for a choice-based story you might say. Indeed, the trailer ends with the words ‘your story starts from there’ indicating that it will be up to the player to shape the fate of their lil’ cast-off. This is inXile Entertainment’s first project after the well received Wasteland 2 which brought another historic franchise back from the dead back in 2014. The game was also a turn-based, top-down, RPG (the 1988 original of which was credited as the inspiration for the Fallout series) so there’s reason to be confident that the developer can do the spiritual successor to Planescape: Torment justice.
Torment: Tides of Numenera releases on PS4, Xbox One, and PC on the 28th of February. We’ll be bringing you all the details that are sure to spill out of the studio over the next couple of weeks. In the meantime, you can find all the info on the game at the official website, here. Let us know how hyped you are for the return of the CRPG in the comments below.
