Remember a little while before the PS4 released and Epic Games showcased its then-new Unreal Engine 4? It was impressive as heck and got us all excited for the possibilities of a new generation of consoles. Well, Epic Games is back with Unreal Engine 5, and the firm has now released a video showing the next-gen engine running on next-gen machines, namely, the PS5.
The entire video is up above, but if you want to see the “real-time gameplay” you’ll have to skip forward to the 1:30 mark.
It’s impressive, I’ll say that, but I’d also urge cautious optimism for gamers. Unreal Engine 4’s tech demo was certainly impressive, but we’ve yet to actually see games look and run as well as that initial demo. I’d guess that the Unreal Engine 5 demo is just that: a demo.
It’s easy to get caught up in the hype surrounding next-gen and fancy graphics, but the reality is that few games will reach the dizzying heights shown in the Unreal Engine 5 demo. Yes, I know that I’m coming across as a bit of a pessimist, but I prefer to think of myself as a realist. Enjoy the video, but don’t let your expectations get carried away by marketing and hype.
