One of our complaints about NHL 17 in our review was the emphasis of heavy simulation put over actual fun. Well developer V7 Entertainment has heard the plea and is working on an arcade, sports game called Old Time Hockey. It’s a love letter to the old-school arcade hockey experiences with afros, no helmets, dirty hits, bench-clearing brawls, goalie fights, stick fights, ref abuse, and just all around aggressive hockey. Needless to say fun is being put first before anything. It’s expected to drop for the PlayStation 4 sometime in early 2017.
“Everything from NHL 94, Blades of Steel, to other sports titles like NBA Jam and Tecmo Bowl inspired us. We wanted to recreate that old familiar experience of playing these games on the couch with friends,” says Director Karthik Venkateshan.
The gameplay will be 5-on-5 but with an arcade style of hockey gameplay with a unique story mode. Something that V7 is proclaiming has never been done before. The plot is set in the late 1970s where a poor economy pushes a struggling hockey team to potential victory. The title will also have a few control schemes to the classic 2-button controls to more modern ones. There will even be a “Beer Mode” that allows gamers to play with only one hand. We’re sure you can guess what your other hand will be intended for. Be sure to check out the announcement trailer above.
