We don’t yet have the new Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 game, but the intellectual property is heating up. Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong is another game in The World of Darkness universe that’s using the lore to create a narrative-driven experience. Big Bad Wolf studio is handling development for the new game. Their last game, The Council, was also heavily focused on telling a story with player involvement in shaping the outcome.
The new tale will be told through the intersecting stories of three vampires in the Camarilla, the secret society of vampires. You will explore the world from their points of view in a story filled with power struggles, murder, and intrigue. For those of you familiar with the material, everything will be adapted from the 5th edition of Vampire: The Masquerade and will have “RPG mechanics”.
I’m intrigued, but what about the team making the game? Are they as nerdy as I hope they’ll be? Have no fear. The Creative & Art Director at Big Bad Wolf, Thomas Veauclin, had this to say about the upcoming game and respect for the intellectual property:
“At the studio, we’re long-time and passionate fans of the tabletop role-playing game Vampire: The Masquerade. We have wanted to create a video game inspired by this universe for several years now. This project fits perfectly with Bigben’s desire to expand its catalogue of narrative games. We are very happy to be unveiling it together.”
Bigben is handling the publishing on this one, and Benoit Clerc, Head of Publishing, sees this a personal project for him and the company. He has some history with these types of games professionally as well as he describes in the follow way:
“My past experience as an editor and author of role-playing games, and also as Editor-in-Chief of an RPG magazine, is proof of how important this project means to me personally. Just like me, many fans have been waiting a long time for a new adaptation of this cult game, which will be developed by one of the most talented studios of its generation.”
With all the corporate high-fiving out of the way, now we just have to wait for the game to slowly give us a teaser trailer in sixteen months or so to see what it’s going to be. I’m optimistic, and I look forward to a less emo version of vampires being cool again.
Jason became terminally addicted to videogames after receiving the NES at an early age. This addiction grew to include PC gaming and was cemented with the launch of the PS2. From then on, he was afflicted with epic RPGs, tense shooters, and deep strategy games, never becoming skillful, but never able to quit. He continues to play games (poorly) and share his passion for them to anyone willing to listen.
