Wayne Rooney Retires From Football, But Not in FIFA 21

Wayne Rooney, the English football legend who turned out for Everton aged 16 before going on to Manchester United, back to Everton, off to the States, then back to the English football league pyramid, has announced his retirement from the beautiful game.

After 20 years of kicking balls, Wayne Rooney has called time on his playing career to focus on managing Derby County, the team he has been in charge of in a player/coach capacity. From here on out, Rooney will be shouting from the touchlines rather than on the pitch.

It’s always a little sad to see a footballing hero (or villain) hang up their boots, but Rooney still lives on in FIFA 21. I’m currently on a FIFA 21 Career Mode save and I’ve got Wayne Rooney sitting on the bench. He’s not all that great and his stats have steadily declined with age, but in the year 2022, he’s still picking up a few cup games here and there.

The in-game commentators are constantly speculating that this may be his last season on the pitch, so he may well follow his real-life counterpart in the near future…

It’ll be interesting to see how long other players last in the game versus real life. I’d love to see Ronaldo playing until his 40s, if only so I can watch him walk around the pitch instead of blitzing around at a speed nobody in their 30s should be able to.
