Will the Stadia Delay PlayStation Games In Google’s Exclusivity Drive?

On paper, the Google Stadia sounds like the perfect gaming accessory. But that potential hasn’t materialised into reality. Instead, Google are regrouping when it comes to its sales strategy. And ten exclusive titles lie at the heart of it.

The question is, will it deprive us traditional console players? And how much will these timed exclusives cost the corporation? Not that the price will matter much if it pays off…

That’s because there has to be an incentive for a game to launch exclusively. And if you can’t guarantee the largest audience, then other factors have to come into play. Money is the obvious one, however vulgar it may read, whilst brand exposure will also come into play. Even if that hasn’t helped so far…

In total, Google are promising 120 new games for the Stadia over the next year – with ten of those being “exclusives”. But no titles are being named explicitly and discussions are still ongoing with developers, by the sounds of it. However, with Sony and Microsoft both releasing their next generation of hardware later this year, I doubt there is much enthusiasm for giving Google a head start – not unless the game wasn’t going to launch universally anyway.

It also doesn’t help that all ten are expected to drop by mid-2020 – a tough order, I’m sure you’ll agree. Still, Google are certainly pulling their socks up when it comes to the Stadia, as this press release confirms:

“Looking at our upcoming lineup, we are tracking more than 120 games coming to Stadia in 2020, and are targeting more than 10 games in the first half of this year alone that will be only available on Stadia when they launch.”

“We’re working with our partners to share more on those games soon.”

That last sentence does make it sound as though things are still up in the air. But then again, being tight lipped always makes things look more drawn out than they probably are behind the scenes. I wouldn’t be surprised if we hear more about this by the end of the month, and that a big name launch has been tempted by their offer. Just don’t ask me to guess which!
