There’ll be more than a touch of Arkane Studios visible in Wolfenstein: Youngblood. That’s because its level design is set to be far less restrictive to that which we’ve been previously used to, enabling freedom fighters to complete the challenges as they see fit.
This way of doing things is described by executive producer Jerk Gustafsson as a world away from what they’ve done before. But this openness will encourage more exploration on the player’s part, along with a more creative approach to the threat at hand. Just like that found in Prey and Dishonored.
“I think players will see a lot of similarities to level design in the Dishonored games, so in that sense it can be a little bit different as an experience but it can be for the benefit of the game, especially when it comes to finding different ways of approaching a combat scenario or a mission in general.”
Details also emerged of the actual gameplay, which is described as “lighter” in both theme and length. However, that does not necessarily translate to less gaming, as the actual time spent playing is described as being greater than that previously owing to the new way of doing things.
The story is also going to be bolstered by a lot more side missions and activities, though these do sound as if they are restricted until the campaign is complete; otherwise you could read it as DLC.
“Players will be able to stay in the game for a long time,” he continued. “We’ll add additional side-missions and new challenges once the campaign is completed. There’s a lot more activities and side-missions that you can do in Wolfenstein: Youngblood than in previous Wolfenstein games.”
Wolfenstein: Youngblood launches on July 26th, and is a spin-off from the main series.
