Days Gone won’t have a multiplayer mode when it releases in a couple of months time, but it could have been different had the bigwigs in charge not said no to a little outside help.
According to Saber Interactive’s Matt Karch, his company, which is developer World War Z, approached Sony with the offer to develop a multiplayer mode for Sony Bend’s Days Gone.
“At some point, I went to Sony and said, ‘I’ve seen what you’re doing with Days Gone. Look what we’re doing with World War Z. Maybe we can help you with a multiplayer component.’ But they were obviously too focused, and understandably, on what they needed to do to get that game out,” Karch told GamesBeat.
It’s an interesting proposition and, to me at least, it’s a bit of a shame Sony didn’t take them up on the offer. I know that many hardcore Sony purists will claim that Days Gone doesn’t need a multiplayer and that it’s a single player game, but isn’t the option to at least have a separate mode a good thing? I know I wouldn’t mind having the option to go and play some co-op once I’ve finished the single player stuff. Alas, it was not to be.
That’s not to say that there won’t be a multiplayer mode at some point in the future; games are pretty fluid these day and keeping players retained is one of the big goals these days, so it’s possible a multiplayer mode could be patched on after the game’s release – though I wouldn’t count on it.
Saber Interactive’s World War Z is set to release in 2019, though there’s no solid release date as of yet. Days Gone will release on April 26th, 2019 – providing there are no more delays, of course.
