What a world we live in, eh? An old-timey Xbox exclusive Star Wars game is making its way to PlayStation and Nintendo consoles with a modern port, but skipping out on Xbox. There’s a good reason for that…
Aspyr Media, the talented porting house behind a slew of recent Star Wars ports of classic games, has announced that Star Wars: Republic Commando will be releasing on PS4, PS5 (via backwards compatibility), and Nintendo Switch this coming April.
What may seem is odd is that there’s no Xbox version in the works. This isn’t Xbox players getting shafted, mind you; the game is already backwards compatible and playable in much higher resolutions. I know because I played it last night and it was fantastic! (Not so bloody ‘Pure’ on the PlayStation, eh?)
However, PlayStation players will get one over their Xbox brethren; trophy support. Star Wars: Republic Commando does not support achievements on Xbox as it was an original Xbox game. The modern version that can be played on Xbox is the same game from 2005, but with some magic backwards compatibility tricks giving the game a massive resolution boost.
Expect the PS4 and Switch ports to be largely the same as the original game with a few tweaks to the controls and higher resolutions. Don’t expect a full-on remastering or remake.
Star Wars: Republic Commando will release on April 6th for PS4 and Nintendo Switch. You can’t pre-order the PS4 version yet, but if you’re planning on buying the game on Switch, you can pre-order now.
