Xbox Game Pass Won’t Be Cross-Platform

Somebody asked the people at Microsoft if the Xbox Game Pass would ever be made available on the PlayStation 4 or 5. But the answer was a categoric ‘no’. However, if you’re thinking that’s an obvious answer to such a strange question, just remember how vocal they’ve been recently about making gaming as inclusive as possible. Therefore, is it really far fetched to think that could also extend to being platform-fluid?

You know, one console but two families of games?

Yeah, okay, it does sound like an implausible scenario. But even though it’s true that Sony may be thinking of leaving current generation gamers behind when their PlayStation 5 first-party games launch, Microsoft could be accused of doing the same by continuing to release exclusives of their own. That’s the gaming industry, as we know. But it’s very similar in one respect, so perhaps you shouldn’t be throwing rocks from inside your own greenhouse, eh?

Phil Spencer explained this approach by stating that other platforms aren’t committed to recreating the full Xbox experience, like achievements, so they have no desire to have a presence there. However, their current strategy of focussing on PC and mobile is allowing them to offer everything they want to who they want so that’s where they’re focussing their attention for now.

“In places where we have brought Xbox, like mobile phones like we’re doing now with Project xCloud and with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate on PC, we know when somebody is playing one of our Xbox games there is an expectation that they’ve got their Xbox Live community, they have their Achievements.

“The other competitive platforms really aren’t interested in having a full Xbox experience on their hardware.”

Now, it’s obvious why the other platforms wouldn’t want to have an Xbox makeup – UI wise. So, there’s no news story to be had there. But with Microsoft taking such a market share of the gaming world, maybe Sony need to start about having a rethink of their own strategy. Not that you’d think that by looking at their profits…
