Initial reports from inside Japan suggested that sales of Yakuza: Like A Dragon were far below expectations. SEGA has struggled to sell the series to its native homeland for quite some time now, and as a result, figures have been in decline. However, it looks like those initial reports were actually premature as the game has now sold nearly half a million copies. And SEGA are celebrating the news by taking a cut in their profits.
It’s no secret that the company has been trying for some time now to sculpt the franchise in a way that provokes excitement with Japanese fans (or would be fans) – even if its western support has been going from strength to strength. And that conundrum has played a large part in the reimagining we’ve seen with Like A Dragon, making it the most rpg-like game to come out of the series. So, I’m happy to report that it looks like all that effort has paid off. And SEGA certainly think so, as they’re offering a 30% discount on the PlayStation Store in Japan.
But will it come at another cost to the company?
What if this acceptance in Asia isn’t replicated by gamers in the remainder of the world? And as a result, an increase in one audience is met by a fall in the other? Where would SEGA be then?
As a big fan of the series, I’m still unsure about these new mechanics. And I doubt it’s something I can resolve without actually playing it for myself (in these circumstance, reviews don’t hold as much weight as a hands on encounter).
But, then again, I guess that means I’d buy it anyway, even if it turns out to be a bit of a let-down. So, sales wouldn’t be deflated by my lost sale at least. But they will start to feel it if the consensus is it’s no good. Because we’re all reliant on the wider community to make wise purchasing decisions, and this one remains a bit of a question mark.
