Team17 and Playtonic have announced the release date for Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair, and it’s not far off at all.
From October 8th, 2019, you’ll be able to go on a side-scrolling adventure with the loveable duo, but pre-orders are open today if you want to lock-in your purchase before release. Not that there’s any chance of a supply shortage, mind you…
Those who do pre-order the game will get access to the exclusive ‘Trowzer’s Top Tonic Pack’ which is a collection of four cosmetic Tonics that affect how the game looks and plays.
- Largee Head tonic: This tonic gives Laylee a comically oversized head
- Glow Worm tonic: Yooka and Laylee glow like… well, glow worms
- D.I.S.C.O. tonic: Turn every level into a platforming party of Playtonic proportions
- Yooka 64: A blast from the past Tonic for fans of all things retro
“We’re excited to announce we are just a few weeks away from sending Yooka and Laylee off onto their next adventure against Capital B,” said Gavin Price, Managing Director & Creative Lead at Playtonic Games. “Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair takes the 2D platforming genre, mixes it up with a 3D world to explore and injects it with the unique humour that Playtonic is known for. Bringing Tonics back in all new flavours (they’re now combinable!) will give the community millions of ways to play the game and we can’t wait to see the results online!”
In addition to the four exclusive tonics listed above, the game itself features over 60 different tonics that can be mixed-and-matched so that players can play the game in new ways, including altering gameplay and unlocking new environmental and visual effects. Sounds mad to me, but I’m sure it’ll be a blast.
Unlike the first game, which was a fully-realised 3D quasi-open-world game, Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair takes the form of a 2.5D platformer with an expansive 3D overworld. It’s a little different and it has been compared, both favourably and unfavourably, to the Donkey Kong series.
Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair will release on October 8th for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC for £24.99/$29.99/€29.99. I was a massive fan of the first game (bought and completed on PS4, Xbox One and Switch – madness!) so here’s hoping Impossible Lair is just as good.
