Today’s PS5 information reveal has delivered some really good news already, like the fact PS4 games will be playable on PS5, but perhaps the bigger news is that the current PSVR headset will also be compatible with the upcoming PS5.
Speaking with Wired, Mark Cerny confirmed that our headsets won’t be resigned to dusty attics or depressing eBay listings once the PS5 releases. “I won’t go into the details of our VR strategy today,” said Cerny, “beyond saying that VR is very important to us and that the current PSVR headset is compatible with the new console.”
So if you’ve got a PSVR headset sitting around in your house already, then good for you – you’ve already got a bit of next-gen compatible gear. That’s not to say that there won’t be another PSVR headset released for the PS5. It’s almost a certainty that Sony is working on a next-gen headset that’ll be superior to what we’re already strapping to our noggins to play Firewall Zero Hour, but it’s good to know that the current model won’t be made obsolete any time soon. Let’s just hope the next headset doesn’t rely on those bloody PS Move wands…
Chris has been writing about gaming news for far too long, and now he’s doing it even more. A true PlayStation know-it-all, Chris has owned just about every Sony console that ever existed. Trophies are like crack to this fella. (Bronze trophies, that is – he only has one Platinum.)
